Chemical name	Mesotrione:  2-[4-(methylsulfonyl)-2-nitrobenzoyl]-1,3-cyclohexanedione Nicosulfuron:  2-[[[[(4,6-dimethoxy-2-pyrimidinyl)amino]carbonyl]amino]sulfonyl]-N,N-dimethyl-3-pyridinecarboxamide
Classification	Herbicide  / Agrochemical
Biochemistry	Mesotrione: p-Hydroxyphenyl pyruvate dioxygenase inhibitor, which ultimately affects carotenoid biosynthesis. Selectivity in maize derives from differential metabolism (to the 4-hydroxy derivative) and also possibly from slower foliar uptake. Nicosulfuron:  Branched chain amino acid synthesis (ALS or AHAS) inhibitor. Acts by inhibiting biosynthesis of the essential amino acids valine and isoleucine, hence stopping cell division and plant growth. Maize selectivity derives from selective metabolism (P450-mediated pyrimidine-5-hydroxylation, followed by conjugation with glucose).
Usage	Mesotrione:  Under development for pre- (at 100-225 g/ha) and post- (at 70-150 g/ha) emergence control of broad-leaved weeds, such as Xanthium strumarium, Ambrosia trifida, Abutilon theophrasti, and Chenopodium, Amaranthus and Polygonum spp., and some grass weeds, in maize. Nicosulfuron: Selective post-emergence control in maize of annual grass weeds including Setaria, Echinochloa, Digitaria, Panicum, Lolium, and Avena spp., broad-leaved weeds including Amaranthus spp. and Cruciferae, and perennials such as Sorghum halepense and Agropyron repens. Applied at 35-70 g/ha.
